Jan 3, 2025 • STAFF

Introduction
Life after service can be difficult — especially when facing unemployment, housing insecurity, or mental health struggles. Fortunately, veterans can access 24/7 crisis support and emergency financial help through federal and nonprofit programs.
Need help applying? Use our free checklist to find out what you qualify for.
1. VA Crisis Hotline (24/7)
Call or text 988 (then press 1) to reach the VA Crisis Line — available 24/7 for:
- Suicidal thoughts
- Substance abuse
- PTSD episodes
- Isolation or hopelessness
They can dispatch mobile crisis units or connect you to local VA care.
2. Emergency Financial Help & Housing
If you're facing eviction or homelessness:
- Contact VA Homeless Programs via 877-4AID-VET (877-424-3838)
- Apply for SSVF (Supportive Services for Veteran Families) — may cover:
- Rent
- Utility bills
- Moving costs
- Find local partners via va.gov/homeless
If you're worried about losing your home, you may qualify for rent help through the VA — or explore other affordable housing programs available to veterans.
3. Other Urgent Resources
- VFW Unmet Needs Program: Up to $1,500 in emergency grants
vfw.org/UnmetNeeds - Operation Homefront: Help for veterans with children
- DAV: Helps with benefits claims, transportation, and legal aid
💡 You don’t need to be receiving VA disability to qualify for crisis help.
